Hello. I’m Laurene Simms. I’m the Chair of the National Deaf People of Color Conference 2027! We’re really excited to gather and discuss the plans for the conference!
Before proceeding, I wanted to talk about the history of NDPC. It began in 2007, with the first gathering in Indianapolis. there were group discussions and shared experiences. The conferences grew out of that event, and it has now become a national space for Deaf, DeafBlind, hard of hearing, and more. Signing people of color from around the world gather in this space to discuss our cultures, identities, leadership, and community building. We will also have honest conversations about important issues in our lives.
The theme is: Recharge the Flame, Carry the Torch Forward
We need to remember the history of those who worked hard to make room for new leaders to carry us toward the future. It’s thrilling and inspiring to see this progress, and to discuss our opportunities together. Remember to look back on the past, empower the present, and inspire the future.
Then we will come together to celebrate 20 years. We hope you are all able to come to the conference!
